Imagining a More Just University – November 15 2022

On November 15, 2022, the Live Work Well Research Centre hosted “Imagining a More Just University”, a panel event which explored how we could create more just academic spaces through reducing barriers to access and ensuring equity for all. Hosted by then Acting Director of Live Work Well, Dr. Leah Levac, the event was built around discussion of practices at the University of Guelph and academia at large, addressing overlapping and intersecting injustices structured by the pandemic, systemic racism and colonialism, (hetero)sexism, ableism and economic inequality.

A Community Conversation: “Troubling” Care – February 4 2022

The idea of ‘troubling care’ has been conceptualized by feminist scholars such as Ann Bartos (2018) and Parvati Raghuram (2016), calling us to consider the complex ways in which care is practiced, experienced, and understood. Academics, community benefit organizations, artists, activists, caregivers, and a range of other actors are doing this work by complicating what care means and re-imagining how it is practiced.  ​This conversation featured a panel of practitioners and scholars who are engaged in the practice of “troubling care.” Panelists’ discussed their everyday experiences and understandings of care, the practices they use to “trouble care,” and their visions for more caring futures.

Nothing Without Us: Disability Inclusion and the Pandemic Recovery // Rien sans nous: Inclusion des personnes en situation de handicap et relance après la pandémie – June 17 2021

The disability community in Canada and internationally has continually called upon all levels of government to include persons with disabilities in its management of the current pandemic and recovery efforts. This side event would focus on how countries can take an overarching “Nothing without us” approach to the pandemic recovery and ensure full social and economic inclusion of persons with disabilities.

From the Margins: Communities Respond to COVID-19 – Poverty and Housing – June 25 2020

The global pandemic has laid bare these historical and pervasive socioeconomic inequalities associated with poverty and precarious housing. The public health crisis created new challenges for community members living with poverty and for organizations involved in supporting folks living with these experiences.
