Disability Accommodation in the Workplace Lecture, Nov 7

On November 7, 2024, at 1:30-3:00p.m. ET on Zoom, the Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Health Equity and Community Wellbeing at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) will be hosting a lecture series. Speakers Dr. Ravi Malhotra and Emily Ruppel, Ph.D., will dive into the topic of Disability Accommodation in the Workplace.  

Their lecture will discuss the reliance of people with disabilities on assistive technology to complete daily activities, and how current technology may or may not help disabled people achieve their goals. Speakers will also focus on the concept of “crip time.” This idea, originally developed by Ellen Samuels and Alison Kafer, describes the differences in how disabled people experience time and how these differences translate into the workplace.  

Adaptive technology has the potential to harness all the skills disabled people are capable of, but only if it is designed with their needs and the notion of crip time in mind. When these factors are taken into account, we imagine a future workplace which levels the playing field and is liberating for all employees.
