New Trauma-Informed Care Training at UofG
On November 11, the University of Guelph announced the launch of their new Trauma-Informed Care Training: Connecting with Compassion. This program will be the first of its kind, aimed at supporting student mental health and offered to UofG faculty and staff.
This training program carries out one of the proposed steps set out in the President's Task Force on Student Mental Health Report: to address gaps in student mental health training, using anti-racism, allyship, and cultural competence training as foundations.
Training is not meant to replace clinical help for students but instead equip staff and faculty with adequate to tools to respond compassionately to students with diverse mental health challenges. This training considers the World Health Organization (WHO) statistic that most people will experience up to three traumatic events in their lifetime. So, developed in collaboration with a multidisciplinary group, this training takes into account the traumas of a diverse demographic.
The training occurs over the span of two hours in person and supplies participants with ways to incorporate the Six Principles of Trauma-Informed Care into their work.
