Virtual Panel - Countering Policy Exclusions: Canada, disability, and international commitments
On February 27, from 12:30-2:00pm ET, the Live Work Well Research Centre (LWWRC) and Dr. Leah Levac’s Canada Research Chair in Critical Community Engagement and Public Policy will be co-sponsoring a panel on Zoom.
The LWWRC is committed to nourishing families, livelihoods, and living environments. The Centre engages in work through research, communities of practice, knowledge mobilization, student engagement, teaching, and learning. Beginning from the margins, the Centre’s research is focused on five intersecting research clusters, each cluster exploring complex themes and the ways they influence work, family, and well-being in all their diverse forms.
As Canada’s Research Chair in Critical Community Engagement and Public Policy, Leah Levac examines how research partnerships can inform innovations in public policy-making. She strives to foster equitable policy outcomes by researching structural inequities such as sexism, colonialism, and classism.
Join host Deborah Stienstra along with three panelists on February 27 to discuss how Canada’s failure to implement international agreements affects persons with disabilities. Canada has signed and ratified key international agreements including on disability, Indigenous rights, race, the environment, economic and social rights and others. Reports from civil society organizations and researchers suggest that the implementation of these agreements is only partial, resulting in fewer supports and services for people with disabilities in Canada and abroad, and more people becoming disabled. This panel of civil society leaders and researchers will identify key implementation gaps and their implications for people with disabilities. They will also illustrate how women, girls and gender-diverse people with disabilities provide leadership to counter these failures.
Panelists Bonnie Brayton, Stephanie Chipeur, and Lynn Gehl will facilitate this conversation. Read more about the panelists and register for the event by visiting the events page on the LWWRC website.
