The Queer Evangelist: A Discussion with Rev. Dr. Cheri DiNovo
Date and Time
Location
Peter Clark Hall, University of Guelph University Centre
Details
Rev. Dr. Cheri DiNovo will be at the University of Guelph to discuss themes from her memoir, The Queer Evangelist: A Socialist Clergy’s Radically Honest Tale. Hosted by the University of Guelph campus ministry and the Guelph Seminar, this is an amazing opportunity to hear someone at the forefront of pro-2SLGBTQIA+ advocacy and legislation implementation!
Previously, Rev. Dr. DiNovo served as MPP for Parkdale-High Park from 2006-2017. During her time as MPP, she passed more pro-2SLGBTQIA+ legislation than anyone in Canadian history, and contributed to the enshrining of Trans rights in the Ontario Human Rights Code and the provincial ban on conversion therapy. While an NDP member in opposition, Rev. Dr. DiNovo also helped raise the minimum wage in Ontario and provided significant supports to people suffering from PTSD.
Rev. Dr. DiNovo’s memoir is a remarkable account of her life before politics and how her childhood shaped her efforts in advocating for the 2SLBTQIA+ community. She aims to bring light to the similar experiences that queer children experience growing up in traumatic households, and the importance of recognizing this truth. Facing many trials in her introduction to politics, Rev. Dr. DiNovo’s memoir reflects the perseverance of unapologetic activism and the significance of changing repressive systems from within.
This is a free opportunity open to those on and off campus, and no registration is required, but donations in support of the Central Student Association (CSA) Food Bank are appreciated. There will also be an opportunity for select students to have dinner with Rev. Dr. DiNovo before the discussion!
