Black History Month at the University of Guelph
February is Black History Month, and this year the Black History Month Committee at U of G has announced the theme to be “Resist, Reclaim, Restore!” The committee, led by Student Experience’s Cultural Diversity Services, chose this theme to honour the strength and resilience of the Black community.
“Resist” asks us to remember the ongoing challenges and systemic oppression that Black people face, and their acts of resistance across generations. “Reclaim” asks us to look for Black achievements and celebrations of culture which are routinely disregarded. “Restore” asks us to think about healing, rebuilding, and empowering Black communities for a more just and equitable future.
The Government of Canada’s theme for Black History Month is “Black Legacy and Leadership: Celebrating Canadian History and Uplifting Future Generations.” This theme reflects of the contributions of Black Canadians to our society and how they have paved the way for a more inclusive future.
To celebrate Black History Month, U of G is hosting a series of events open to UofG faculty, staff, and students. Find out more information about Black History Month at U of G in the full news article.
