International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia: May 17

Saturday, May 17, is International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia, a day to acknowledge the harassment and discrimination that people with these identities face and to campaign for sexual equality.

The World Health Organization (WHO) removed homosexuality from the category of mental disorders on May 17, 1990. After this milestone decision, every year on May 17, people around the world draw attention to the oppression that gay, bisexual, and transgender folks face on a day-to-day basis.

The International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Intersex Association (ILGA) is a global organization which fights for the rights of LGBTQIA+ communities. Through the fostering of networks, communities, and movements, this organization is working towards a world in which everyone can live equally. In November 2024, at the ILGA World Conference, the theme for 2025’s International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia was announced as: “the power of communities.”

This 2025 theme celebrates the strength of LGBTQIA+ communities, from the local to the global level. This year’s theme also celebrates the intersectional identities throughout LGBTQIA+ communities and how we are strongest when we turn to one another. In order to truly fight for LGBTQIA+ rights, it’s important to acknowledge the value of each member of the community—from the allies in your hometown to those defending human rights at the federal level.

Only united in solidarity can we achieve real change. Visit the May 17 website to see events taking place around the world for International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia.
