Multiculturalism Day
Multiculturalism Day occurs annually in Canada on June 27. This day is an opportunity for Canadians of all backgrounds to honour the diverse heritage and culture of those around them and appreciate the cultural mosaic that Canada embraces.
The LWWRC is committed to researching and supporting the livelihoods of people, families, and communities around the world. At the intersections of our five clusters—“All My Relations” Indigenous Ways of Knowing; Disabilities, Access, and Inclusion; Displacements, Emergence, and Change; Reimagining Care; and Sexual and Gender Diversity—lies a variety of cultures and traditions worth celebrating.
Our “All My Relations” Indigenous Ways of Knowing cluster works toward the celebration and sharing of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis cultures and traditions. Projects like Nokom’s House and the Indigenous Mentorship Network Program are incredible starting points for learning more about Indigenous languages and ways of life.
In the Notes from the Field section of our website, you’ll find a number of blogs focusing on multiculturalism! In The Migration Experience: An Interview with Shruti Nadkarni, Shruti discusses her immigration-centred research and the challenges many immigrants face in coming to Canada. In Mothers in Diaspora: An Interview with Sharon Findlay we talked with a project manager at the LWWRC about her research into migration, oral history, individual and collective memory, and the concept of home.
Understanding and appreciating the experiences of our immigrant siblings and the diverse traditions and heritage around us are great ways to celebrate Multiculturalism Day! k
